The Haus der Statistik has been empty in the middle of Berlin for 10 years. The initiative Haus der Statistik, a group of committed artists, architects, cultural workers and politicians, prevented the sale to investors and the planned demolition in 2015. After long negotiations a cooperation of five partners (""KOOP 5"") was decided: The Senate Department for Urban Development and Housing, the District Office Berlin-Mitte, the state-owned companies WBM Wohnungsbaugesellschaft Berlin-Mitte and BIM Berliner Immobilienmanagement, as well as ZUsammenKUNFT Berlin eG, which emerged from the initiative, have been working together since January 2018 in joint responsibility on the development of the Haus der Statistik for the common good. In the existing building and the approx. 65,000 m² of the new construction, spaces for art, culture, social affairs and education, affordable housing as well and a new town hall for central and administrative uses are being created. During the planning and construction period, the ground floor areas of the existing buildings will be put back into service. These so-called pioneer uses are testing the process of what will later be created in the neighborhood. The exhibition space in Haus A was the first to open in June 2019 and is now available for different formats.
